چکیده

Let’s design a simple camera system – a system that can record an image of an object or scene in the 3D world. This camera system can be designed by placing a barrier with a small aperture between the 3D object and a photographic film or sensor. As Figure 1 shows, each point on the 3D object emits multiple rays of light outwards. Without a barrier in place, every point on the film will be influenced by light rays emitted from every point on the 3D object. Due to the barrier, only one (or a few) of these rays of light passes through the aperture and hits the film. Therefore, we can establish a oneto-one mapping between points on the 3D object and the film. The result is that the film gets exposed by an “image” of the 3D object by means of this mapping. This simple model is known as the pinhole camera model.

CS231A Course Notes 2: Single View Metrology

In the previous lecture notes, we discussed how we can transform points from the real, 3D world into digital images using the extrinsic and intrinsic properties of cameras. We looked at how we can use known structure in a calibration rig and its corresponding image to deduce these camera properties. This time, we will look at a related problem: can we recover known structure of the 3D world if ...

CS231A Course Notes 4: Stereo Systems and Structure from Motion

In the previous notes, we covered how adding additional viewpoints of a scene can greatly enhance our knowledge of the said scene. We focused on the epipolar geometry setup in order to relate points of one image plane to points in the other without extracting any information about the 3D scene. In these lecture notes, we will discuss how to recover information about the 3D scene from multiple 2...

CS231A Course Notes 5: Active and Volumetric Stereo

In traditional stereo, the main idea is to use corresponding points p and p′ to estimate the location of a 3D point P by triangulation. A key challenge here, is to solve the correspondence problem: how do we know whether a point p actually corresponds to a point p′ in another image? This problem is further accentuated by the fact that we need to handle the many 3D points that are present in the...

An Overview of Passive Vision Techniques

This section surveys passive optical techniques for recovering scene shape and reflectance characteristics from images. The objective is to acquire images of a scene observed from different viewpoints and possibly different illuminations, and from these images to compute scene shape and reflectance at every surface point. Given estimates of shape we can fabricate duplicate 3D models using techn...
